Eastern Market - Detroit

Monday, December 29, 2014

Since winter has been so mild in the Midwest this year, I went to Detroit's Eastern Market last Saturday to amble around and check out the new vendors.  I forgot my camera, but luckily the new i-phone 6 have a camera equipped with Focus Pixels, 8MP, and an f/2.2 aperture lens soo these quick snaps didn't come out utterly horrible!

I even made this GIF of the ice skaters in Campus Martius Park from some of the video I shot with the HD video camera!  Yeah, I'm excited I finally have a phone that doesn't randomly turn off or receive text messages 3 days late.  Okay, I'm done.  Now onto Eastern Market...

Wearing: Jeans, Boots: F21; Purse: Vintage; Jacket: Levi's (Vintage);
Scarf: handmade (from vintage yarn); Hat: TopShop

P.S. - Did anybody else get a shiny new i-phone 6 for Christmas?  I loved checking out this list of "10 Tips and Tricks for Your I-Phone 6 Camera" from Tech Radar.

Favorite Christmas Movies

Wednesday, December 24, 2014

When it comes to holiday movies, everyone knows the tried and true favorites: Home Alone, A Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation, It's a Wonderful Life... and who doesn't love those?  No Christmas-week-with-your-family is complete without also visiting Charlie Brown, The Grinch, and Scrooge.  But if you find yourself growing lackadaisical toward traditional Christmas film fare, here are a couple (okay, quite a few) of our favorite oft-overlooked Christmas movies.  Some are sad, some are funny, some are bloody, and some are adorable.  All of them do have one thing in common, though: a Christmas tree in at least one scene.

The Godfather I

The Preacher's Wife

While You Were Sleeping

A Christmas Tale

Lethal Weapon

Olive, the Other Reindeer

Jingle All the Way

Batman Returns

Christmas in Connecticut

Die Hard

Friday After Next

Frosty the Snowman

Ghostbusters II

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Book Club: Brain on Fire

Monday, December 8, 2014

This month, we are reading "Brain on Fire", by Susannah Cahalan.  I've been dying to read this for awhile, so I was SO excited someone in my book club chose it for this month!  This unbelievable memoir is sure to be a page-turner.

At the end of the month, I will be posting discussion prompts for you to use in your own book club, or to answer in the comments!

Happy reading!

Thanksgiving 2014

Tuesday, December 2, 2014

Each year, I'm so lucky to spend Thanksgiving with my best friend and her family.  They have a HUGE family and celebrate the holiday by gathering together Thursday, Friday, and Saturday on the SoCal coast.  We attempted to combat some of the gluttony by doing "prison workouts" on the beach in the morning, but I don't know how much our parkour fails and picnic table tricep-dips actually helped.

On Saturday, I wore this cute dress I got at Lost & Found Vintage.  If anybody knows about the origins of the dress, please leave a comment - I just rocked it at dinner because I thought the birds on the front kind of looked like turkeys.  :)

Hope you had a relaxing weekend with loved ones, too, whether you're in America or a country that doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving.  I love the first week of December - it's finally appropriate to start decorating for Christmas and annoying your friends with constant group texts about your ideas for themed parties!  (Gingerbread House decorating party, amirite?!)

Book Club Discussion Prompts: Orange is the New Black

Thursday, November 20, 2014

My book club here in LA really enjoyed reading Orange Is The New Black.  Probably because at least half of us are huge fans of the show.  While the book definitely differed greatly from the show, I personally enjoyed learning about the treatment of non-violent criminals here in the United States and found Piper Kerman's views on the subject to be enlightening.  This great website contains some pretty interesting statistics, and delves more in depth into the differences between the show, the memoir, and the actual U.S. prison system, if you're interested in researching more post-read.

Here are some discussion prompts for your own book club meeting, after the jump.   Beware... SPOILERS AHEAD!

Rose Bowl Flea Market

Thursday, November 13, 2014

Recently, my Mom, sister, and I went to the Rose Bowl Flea Market for the first time ever.  AND IT WAS GREAT!  I assumed that because of how well known it is, the prices would be through the roof, but I was very pleasantly surprised.  The vast majority of the booths were incredibly reasonable for all sorts of vintage treasures.  If you live in L.A., you know this is a huge relief.  Vintage items in good condition (especially clothes) can be super hard to find at a normal price point.  So, on that Sunday, there was much rejoicing!

My sis and I scored some cool rings and stuff for around our houses.  I can't wait to return - I have my eye on several vintage Varsity jackets, and am already dreaming of all the ways I'm going to embellish them for the shop this holiday season!
